Dual tournament format

From Liquipedia StarCraft 2 Wiki

The dual tournament is a format of group stage, initially used by GOMTV in GSL, first during the 2011 GSL July Code S, and uses more and more instead of classic format, where every player faces all the other players of the group.

Format[edit]

  • The 4 players of the group are split into two pairs and play each other.
  • The winners of these matches will then face each other in the Winner’s match.
    • The victor places first in the group and advances to the next stage.
  • The losers of the initial matches face each other in the Loser’s match.
    • The loser places fourth in the group, will be eliminated of ths stage.
  • The loser of the Winner’s match and the winner of the Loser’s match will face each other in a fifth match.
    • The winner gets second place in the group and advances to the next stage.
    • The loser places third in the group and will be eliminated of ths stage.

Differences with classic group stage[edit]

The main purpose of this format is to avoid matches with no stake, or with stake for only one player, for example, a match between two players already eliminated, or between a player already eliminated and a player who can still qualify to the next stage. Indeed, every match is crucial: it can either let a player to qualify to the next stage , or make him quit the tournament.
