The Lake Charles Scion E-Sports Thanksgiving Open is an annual event hosted by Lake Charles Toyota in Lake Charles, Louisiana. At the time of the event the organization was known as Lake Charles Scion eSports, but has since changed their branding to simply Scion Esports. The 2013 edition of the event was held on December 14, 2013. The event was originally planned for November 23, hence the name, but was rescheduled to accommodate the scheduling of several participants. The event consisted of two StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm tournaments running concurrently, one professional with a prize pool of over $4,000, and one amateur, with a prize pool of $1,000. There was no entry fee for either tournament. All skill levels were able to register for the amateur tournament.
On 17 October 2013, Lake Charles Scion staff announced that they would be publishing weekly video press conferences to their YouTube channel to give players and fans up-to-date information about the development of the tournament. The videos will be posted here.
Overview[edit]
Prize Pool[edit]
Pro Tournament[edit]
Amateur Tournament[edit]
Format[edit]
There will be a pro and an amateur tournament taking place concurrently on site on December 14th. The pro tournament will consist of 16 players that qualified through online rounds and the amateur tournament will consist of up to 64 players played only on site. On 2 November 2013, the organizers announced that registration will conclude and details of the qualifying procedures for the Pro Tournament will be announced on 15 November.
Pro Tournament Structure[edit]
The format of the pro tournament is currently under review. All rounds of the tournament will be played using the custom game mode of Battle.net. All games will be 1v1 Melees played on the retail version of StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm. All games will be played on maps selected from the standard Blizzard Battle.net season 5 map pool.
Qualifying Rounds[edit]
The qualifying rounds were WCS style group play. The group play narrowed the field of qualifiers to eight. These eight players will then join eight players brought by invitation and will play on site in a 16 player single elimination tournament. Each round of the qualifying phase was best of three. The qualifying rounds will be played over battle.net on 22 and 23 November.
Live Event Rounds[edit]
The round of 16 through the grand final will be played live on site on 14 December. Players who lose out of the Pro Tournament before the live event will be allowed to enter the amateur tournament. Each round of the live event will be best of three with the semifinals and finals being best of five, time permitting.
Amateur Tournament Structure[edit]
The amateur tournament will consist of 64 players separated into four groups of 16 based on skill level who will then compete in double elimination format. All amateur rounds will be single games.
