[edit] Overview

An Immortal Rush is currently the standard build to counter a Zerg Roach rush. The aim is to get Immortals and an Observer out as soon as possible in order to stop the early Roach push. However, it should be noted that the Zerg are starting to stray away from Roach openings and so this opening may become less common.

NOTE: Since the beta patch 9, Immortal build time has increased, this means you will have ONE Immortal out 10 seconds later even if your timing & Chrono Boost is perfect; this makes your window of opportunity smaller and thus makes an early Immortal Rush less effective.

[edit] Build Order Clarification

  • It is a good idea to either build close to your Nexus or to wall your choke (pick one and stick with it)
  • After the Immortal, it is recommended to build 1 or 2 Observers to scout the Zerg and prevent Burrow use.
  • If the Observer sees no immediate Zerglings, no Zealots are needed.
  • If the Observer sees a Zergling rush use Chrono Boost to help your Gateway build Zealots faster.

[edit] Transition

You will get an Immortal out early and you should not stop producing them until around 5 to 7 Immortals - unless you need to build a new Observer. You should be able to get an expansion in between 40 and 50 supply, depending on your opponent's aggression. You should also start to build Sentries, to use their Guardian Shield ability, and Zealots, to help shield your Immortals from the Roaches.

If you scout a Lair with your Observer, make a Stargate in order to counter a possible Mutalisk switch. If he does so, make Phoenixes all the time to prepare for the large number of incoming Mutalisks. At the same time, you may want to be producing Stalkers and Sentries as well. Phoenixes are strong against Mutalisks while Stalkers are effective against both Roaches and Mutalisks. Sentries provide excellent support with their abilities.

If the Zerg has taken an expansion, stop producing and get an expansion as well. Try to pressure your opponent as much as possible.
