Chronology

IEM Season XII - PyeongChang is the second event of IEM Season XII which hosts a StarCraft II Tournament, organized by ESL and held in PyeongChang, South Korea, with full support from the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Format[edit]

Qualifiers[edit]

  • 5 slots available for Europe (1 North, 1 West, 1 South, 1 East and 1 Central).
  • 2 slots available for North America, South America and South Korea.
  • 1 slot available for Africa, East Asia, West Asia, China and Oceania.
  • Each regional qualifier is separated into two stages.
    • The first stage determines the eight best players from each region. Those that came out victorious in Stage 1 move on to the second stage of the qualifiers.
    • In the second stage, the top 8 players of each qualifier compete against one another for the coveted qualifier spot in the Intel Extreme Masters PyeongChang finals.
  • The following regions have two stages:
    • All European qualifiers
    • China
    • North and South America
    • Oceania
    • South Korea
      • The first stage is played as a single elimination Bo3, until the tournament reaches the Ro16 at which point players play a best of five series, and the winners will advance to stage two.
      • The second stage is a double-elimination best of three bracket. In regions with one qualifier slot (Oceania, China, and Europe), the grand finals are played as a Bo5 series where the player from the winner’s side of the bracket will begin with a 1:0 lead, and the winner of the tournament will qualify for Intel Extreme Masters PyeongChang.
      • In regions with two qualifier slots (South Korea, North and South America), the upper bracket, lower bracket and grand finals are played as a standard best of 5 series, and both of the finalists earn a coveted qualifier spot.
  • The following regions have a single stage, with their formats varying depending on the number of entrants:
    • Africa
    • East Asia
    • West Asia
      • If 9 or more players enter the qualifiers in these regions, the tournament is played as a single elimination Bo3 bracket that concludes with a Bo5 final. In the event 8 or fewer players enter, the tournament is played in the same fashion as the two-stage tournaments above.
