As part of the Intel Extreme Masters Season V, US Regular Season Cups are a series of 4 weekly online tournaments held by ESL to qualify for the IEM Season V - American Championships. The winner will receive $100 and the top 4 will go through to the Group Stage. It seems to be eligible to enter these events, you must either have won a minor ESL cup previously, or must be high ranked on the ESL Ladders.

Cup Format[edit]

The format is a standard single-elimination with Bo1s played until the round of 8. The rounds of 8 and 4 will be Best of 3 and the finals will be Best of 5.

Map Selection[edit]

Starting with the lower seed, each player will "toss" out a map from the map pool. That map is no longer allowed to be picked for play for that match. This alternates between players until 3 maps remain. The higher seed picks one of the 3 maps as the first map of the match. The lower seed picks one of the 2 remaining maps as the second map of the match. The 1 remaining map is then used as the tie breaker map if a third map has to be played for the match.

Cup 1[edit]

Held on the 1st of August 2010, the first cup saw two of America's best, qxc and HuK qualify for the group stage alongside unknown Silver and solid terran ThisIsJimmy.

Qualifiers[edit]

Silver[edit]

Following the first cup, there was much talk surrounding unknown player Silver. While many thought he was a smurf, it was revealed that he was a former Warcraft III player. The community began to praise his intelligence in-game and he instantly became a fan favourite for many after defeating top players from each race, IdrA 2-0, qxc 2-1 and HuK 3-2.

The groups were drawn by djWheat live on his Weapon of Choice show on the 29th of August. For unspecified reasons, IdrA withdrew from the competition and was replaced by Bubba. Many believe it is due to his participation in the 2010 TG Sambo Intel StarCraft II Open Season 1.
