[edit] Overview
[edit] Playstyle
The key to his success is his massive risk taking and volatile unpredictability, with playstyles as varied as Baneling all-ins to massive overdroning. FruitDealer is noted as one of the most interesting and fun players to watch. FruitDealer is also noted for being somewhat overconfident at times, especially in the earlier seasons, leading to him practicing less than he should, which has given him several losses.
[edit] Biography
FruitDealer was a professional Broodwar player for the Korean team eSTRO before he started his StarCraft 2 career. Formerly known as Cool, he was forced to leave progaming to help run his mother's fruit stand while his father was ill. After his break from progaming, FruitDealer picked up StarCraft 2 and began to play, quickly becoming a top Zerg player in Korea.
[edit] In Beta
In the early Beta, FruitDealer topped the Asian ladder. It was widely speculated that FruitDealer was a former Broodwar pro. On April 19th, FruitDealer played an invitational showmatch with Maka, and his identity as Cool was revealed.
[edit] Wings of Liberty
In August, FruitDealer announced his departure from the team oGs.[2]By early September, he had joined the new-founded team Team SCV Life[3], along with Tester, Clide and Gas.
In August 2010, FruitDealer qualified for the first GSL Open Season Tournament and would later become the only Zerg player remaining in the tournament by the Round of 8. He would advance to the finals against HopeTorture and win the entire tournament in a dominating fashion by a margin of 4-1 at a time in which it was widely perceived that Zerg was strongly disadvantaged versus Terran. His victory would solidify his perception as the greatest StarCraft 2 player in the world at the time.
FruitDealer qualified for the second GSL season in October 2010 and easily advanced to the Round of 32 after a 2-0 victory. Later that month, FruitDealer was invited to play a showmatch against BoxeR at Blizzcon 2010. FruitDealer defeated The Emperor 2-0 in the highly-anticipated matchup. After returning to Korea and the GSL, the reigning champion was defeated in a 2-0 upset by a then-unknown player playing under the ID BoxeR in the Round of 32. This player would become known as "Fake Boxer" or "FoxeR" to fans throughout the tournament, and would later change his name to "MarineKing".
FruitDealer qualified for the third and final GSL open season. He reached the Round of 8 before losing to HongUn 2-3. FruitDealer was the last Zerg eliminated in the tournament, as NesTea was also defeated earlier that day. His performance in the three GSL open tournaments secured him a #1 seed for the beginning of the 2011 GSL season. This meant, of course, that he was immediately placed into the coveted Code S league of the GSL.
On the 24th of June, FruitDealer left TSL because he disagreed with the direction TSL was heading.[4] It was later announced that he had joined StarTale.[5]
On March 5th 2012, it was announced that he was appointed to coach StarTale's League of Legends team, effectively retiring from StarCraft 2 progaming.
[edit] Code S
In the GSL January Code S Tournament, FruitDealer went 1-2 in his first round group, losing to Mvp and Zenio but defeating JookTo, thus "advancing" to the Up & Down playoffs. He would lose to sC 1-2 in the first round but defeat Maka 2-0 to retain his Code S position.
In the GSL March Code S Tournament, FruitDealer was placed in a group exclusively made up of Protoss opponents. He would only manage to defeat Genius, thrusting him once again into the Up & Down matches. He would easily sweep Virus 2-0 to stay in Code S.
During the group drawings for the GSL May Tournament, FruitDealer was picked by Lyn and ended up being placed into Group F alongside Check and teammate Killer. FruitDealer advanced from the group stages for the first time after defeating both Lyn and Check. In the round of 16, FruitDealer would face fellow Zerg champion NesTea, to whom he succumbed 2-1, ending his tournament run.
In the next GSL, Fruitdealer fell 0-2 to TOP and Virus, proceeding to the Up & Down matches for a third time. This time, however, FruitDealer would not make it back to Code S. He ended up going 0-3 in his group, thus falling to Code A.
[edit] Code A
FruitDealer's first appearance in Code A was in the GSL August Tournament. He was eliminated from the Round of 16 by GanZi, the eventual winner of the tournament. FruitDealer did not advance to the Up & Down matches, but he retained his spot in Code A. Likewise, in GSL October, FruitDealer would be eliminated in the Round of 16 again, but this time by JYP 0-2.
FruitDealer qualified for GSL November and faced Alicia in the Round of 48. He lost 0-2, making him the second GSL winner (after MC) to be knocked completely out of the GSL.
[edit] Outside Korea
FruitDealer had an excellent performance in the foreign tournament IEM Season VI - Global Challenge New York. He started off in Pool D where he managed to place second, losing only to elfi. Moving on to the playoffs, he managed to beat his old teammate Killer 3-1, and then followed that up by defeating Gatored 3-0. In the finals against DongRaeGu, FruitDealer was up 2-0 but lost three games in a row to end up in second place overall. His impressive showing secured him a spot in the IEM Season VI - World Championship in Hanover in March 2012.
[edit] Trivia
- 과일장수 means "Fruit Dealer." FruitDealer's mother is a fruit vendor, and he occasionally helps her out, hence the name.[citation needed]
