The Cybernetics Core is an important Protoss tech building. It unlocks the production of the Protoss ranged ground unit, the Dragoon, and allows the research of the Dragoon range upgrade. The Cybernetics Core also enables three advanced Protoss tech buildings to be built: the Robotics Facility, Stargate, and Citadel of Adun. The Cybernetics Core also allows the Protoss player to access two upgrades, Air Weapons and Air Armor. The Cybernetics Core allows level one upgrades in both of these but requires the Fleet Beacon to access the level two and three level of upgrades in Air Weapons and Air Armor.

Analogous to the Terran Armory and Zerg Spire, the Cybernetics Core does not build any units directly, but researches important upgrades for air units.

The Cybernetics Core is built relatively early in all match-ups.

In the PvT match-up, it is generally built in the early game regardless of the Protoss strategy and build order. For example, strategies involving Dragoons, Reavers, Observers, and Dark Templars all require the Cybernetics Core. When opting for an early Dragoon attack, the Dragoon range upgrade is researched immediately after the Protoss player can afford to; this allows the Dragoon to better deal damage to Bunkers and Siege Tanks. The Cybernetics Core structure is usually built in the main base, rather than aiding in the Sim-City at the natural or chokepoints.

In the PvZ match-up, the Cybernetics Core is warped in during the early game in the popular Fast Expand build order. The Cybernetics Core is built immediately after the natural base's chokepoint is adequately defended. This enables the Protoss player to tech towards Corsairs, Zealot speed, and High Templars with Psi Storm.

In the PvP match-up, the Cybernetics Core is also generally built in the early game regardless of the Protoss strategy and build order. For example, strategies involving Dragoons, Reavers, Observers, and Dark Templars all require a pre-existing Cybernetics Core. When opting for a Dragoon attack, the Dragoon range upgrade is researched immediately after the Protoss player can afford to; this allows the Dragoon to better deal damage to the Protoss opponent's Dragoons and Reavers. The Cybernetics Core is usually built in the main base, rather than aiding in the Sim-City at the natural or chokepoints.

During the active research of upgrades, the Cybernetics Core displays a rotating glowing ring. During the mid to late game, the Protoss may elect to build a second Cybernetics Core if the player opts for a army of air units, such as Scouts or Carriers, but this is not common.
