Description[edit]

A very tall and narrow map, Chupung-Ryeong has several different pathways to go from one base to the other. Introduced as the "Mystery Map" for the 2008 Incruit OnGameNet Starleague, this map has showcased some very interesting and exciting games. The high ground along the shortest path in between the two bases acts as a barrier in most games because it is a choke, as well as providing defense to the defender. The third base is relatively far away, which enforces two base play, and the natural has two entrances (one normal sized choke along the shortest path, one narrow entrance), making the natural slightly harder to defend than normal.

Only 86 games were played on the original version of the map before Sin Chupung-Ryeong replaced it. It was essentially the same map except that the cliff behind the natural was changed to make it harder to defend vs Muta Harass. Sin Chupung-Ryeong had 122 games played on it before being retired at the end of Winners' League and the Batoo OSL. The map was known for slightly favoring Terran due to the many narrow passages and tight chokes, and its removal from the map pool was probably due to this.

When the map was first introduced into the leagues, it was known for hosting a plethora of early game cheese, including many proxies and gas-steals which were easy to perform (due to it being a two-player map) and hard to detect (due to the many passages near the natural). The map imbalance favoring Terran over Protoss might have been another factor as to why so many Protosses opted to perform such tactics early-game.

Notable Features[edit]

  • Two entrances into natural - There are two entrances into the natural, making the Bisu Build slightly more difficult, as well as providing another direction to place a Proxy Gateway.
  • Narrow pathways - This map features multiple narrow pathways, which makes Vulture harassing and scouting for Proxies much more difficult.
  • Easily Cliffable Expansions - expansions in the middle of the map (most at the three o'clock and the nine o'clock positions) can easily be harassed because the minerals are right next to higher ground.

Changes[edit]

  • The area behind the natural was changed to low ground allowing players to sneak behind and harass the natural's mineral line more easily.

Notable Games[edit]

  • Terran Fantasy vs. Protoss Stork, 2008 Incruit OSL Finals, 5th set — Showcases early-game aggression by Protoss commonly seen on the map.
  • Zerg Jaedong vs. Terran Fantasy, 2008-09 Shinhan Bank Proleague
  • Terran Flash vs. Zerg Jaedong, 2009 Shinhan Bank Winners League — During the map's lifetime 2 Hatch Muta was very popular; Flash executes a very good counter-strategy in this game vs the #1 Zerg at the time.

  • Zerg Jaedong vs. Terran Iris, 2009 Shinhan Bank Winners League — Jaedong executes one of the most famous 2-hatch muta games of all time.
