Son "BackHo" Chan Woong is a former StarCraft progamer from South Korea who played Protoss for Hwaseung OZ. He currently plays in amateur leagues.

Biography[edit]

BackHo made his debut in late 2006, and for the next year and a half appeared infrequently on Hwaseung Oz's (then known as Lecaf Oz) lineup. He made his Starleague debut in the Bacchus OSL 2008 where he went 0-3 in the Ro16. Backho made a big splash onto the scene though in the 2008 EVER OSL, where he upset his teammate Jaedong in the Ro32 before defeating Bisu, Much and JangBi to reach the semifinals before losing, to eventual winner July, 1-3. Shortly after this, BackHo reached the semifinals of the GSL season 1, upsetting favorites Stork and Kal before losing to Flash 0-3. In Proleague Backho took over as the leading Protoss player of his team after teammate Anytime left for military service. Despite his success in the summer of 2008, BackHo continued to perform averagely afterwards, dropping out in the Ro32 of the Clubday OSL and the Ro16 of the Incruit OSL.

In January 2009 BackHo injured his back and did not play again until April 2009. He forfeited to JangBi in the Ro8 of the GSL season 2 (JangBi went on to lose in the finals to Bisu) and also gave up his spot in the Ro16 of the Batoo OSL. To decide who would receive this place, a wildcard tournament was held with previous eliminated players. Bisu won the wildcard spot and took BackHo's place in the OSL. In April BackHo once again started to play again, being the leading Protoss on his team is currently in the Ro16 of the Bacchus OSL 2009. In response to his accident, in a projected headed by TeamLiquid members NeverGG and lilsusie, a "Get Well Soon" card was made with messages collected from BackHo's foreign fans.[1]

BackHo played solidly in the 08-09 Proleague, finishing with stats of 15 wins and 17 losses. This included a victory over Snow in the Proleague playoffs which contributed to OZ's victory over CJ Entus. BackHo played on both days in the Proleague grand final. He lost to Best as part of SKT's day 1 whitewash of OZ. On day two, BackHo defeated Canata in his match, giving his team a chance at coming back and winning the game. Despite efforts from Killer and Lomo, OZ lost the second day in the ace match and finished as runners up.

BackHo was seeded into the 2009 EVER OSL where he was knocked out in the Round of 36 after losing 1-2 to Calm. BackHo played only three times in the 09-10 Proleague Round 1, going 0-3. He lost his only game in round two leaving him with 0-4 overall record.

It was revealed in January 2010 that BackHo once again has a medical issue with his back.[2] In 2011 he retired, with the intent of becoming a pastor after completing his military duty.[3] Currently, Backho streams from time to time on Afreeca.

Controversy[edit]

Before his leave of absence due to back injury, BackHo played what became one of the most inadvertently controversial games of 2008 in the Ro36 of the Batoo OSL vs Firefist. During the game BackHo had a considerable advantage and accidentally typed in "ZiZi YO" (which is his signature way of saying "gg") because he thought he heard the beep that is played when someone enters a message (apparently thinking that Firefist just then typed in "gg"). After a long pause by the referee, instead of making a ruling they left it up to Firefist to decide whether he wanted the win or not (he accepted defeat and did not punish BackHo for his mistake). This was controversial because the referees did not make BackHo forfeit the game even though he typed in "gg" (the rule was that if you type in something "gg" you lose the game). Shortly after, KeSPA changed the rule so that only "ppp", "gg", and "GG" are allowed to be typed in without being disqualified.

BackHo was also GoRush's opponent during his disqualification from the 2009 Bacchus OSL after he mistakenly typed 'ㅎㅎ' instead of gg and then typed an 'a' in their final game. GoRush was forced to forfeit both games and BackHo moved on to the next round.[4] BackHo said he felt "weird" seeing his opponent disqualified due to a rule that was implemented because of his previous actions.[5]

BackHo faced one more incident at the beginning of 10/11 Proleague season, when he was playing a game in Hwaseung Oz vs. STX Soul Proleague match. He typed "ppp" to pause game (because lights on his monitor reportedly went low), but did so only after he had actually pressed the pause button. He was given a technical loss for that, one more decision by KeSPA that was a subject of controversy between fans.

Facts[edit]

  • BackHo is known for being decent mechanically but being a terrible strategic player, earning the nickname "FailHo" in the foreign scene.
  • "Backho" is Korean for "White Tiger".
  • Before the incident in the Batoo OSL which changed the rules, BackHo was known for typing in "ZiZi Yo" instead of "gg".
  • BackHo now goes under the name "Jesus".
