Joel "Isai" Alvarado (pronounced like Isaiah) is a retired Melee Captain Falcon main from San Jose, California. He is currently considered to be one of the best 64 players despite being known for playing low-tier characters in tournament. Back in the MLG era, he was considered the best Captain Falcon player in the United States, scoring multiple victories over Ken during Ken's prime. An episode of the The Smash Brothers documentary entitled "Don't Get Hit" focused entirely on him.

Biography[edit]

Isai emerged as a contender in the Northern California scene around 2004 along with Ken. He won an early national tournament at MOAST 3 in Dallas, Texas in January 15th-16th, 2005.

In 2005, he traveled with Ken and several other American players to Japan to participate in the Jack Garden Tournament.[1] His final placement in this tournament is unknown.

Isai and Ken's team was called "El Chocolate Diablo". They first teamed in 2004, and they won every tournament they entered until 2006 MLG Chicago, where they lost to the team of Chillindude and Azen. In singles, he frequently got top 8 at MLG events. In 2007, Isai started to lose interest in Melee, and he stopped playing Melee after Super Champ Combo, where him and Ken got 7th in doubles at their final event together.

At the end of 2006 he was ranked 9th on the Smash Panel Power Rankings.

At Apex 2012, he was convinced to play an exhibition on stream versus Captain Jack. In the exhibition, he sandbagged and was quickly defeated.

In 64, Isai is known for his mastery of all of the characters. He won Apex 2014 using exclusively Jigglypuff. He has also achieved 2nd place finishes at Apex 2012 and 2013 using Link (who is last on the 64 tier list) and Mario respectively.

In 2014, Isai was sponsored by CLASH Tournaments.[2] He streamed Super Smash Bros. weekly on their Twitch channel from late-2013 to mid-2015. It is unknown when his contract lapsed.

Isai traveled to Japan for 8th Kanto, but did not compete in the tournament.[3] However, he did complete a 12 character battle with Jouske during his visit, which Jouske won.[4]
