Evolution Championship Series
The Evolution Championship Series, commonly shortened to EVO, is the premier fighting game tournament series, held annually since 2002.
Super Smash Bros. Melee has been featured five times at EVO. Its first appearance was in 2007 with 270 entrants, which was the biggest tournament in Melee at that time. The game did not reappear in 2008 due to the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which replaced Melee in the EVO game lineup. After a five year hiatus, Melee returned to the EVO stage for the 2013 edition by winning a donation drive. Since then, Super Smash Bros. Melee has appeared at every consecutive EVO, breaking attendance records each time.
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U has had two appearances at EVO. On January 20, 2015, it was officially recognized in the lineup for EVO 2015. The game was well received enough to be welcomed back in the 2016 edition, and has boasted impressive entrant numbers both times.
