Samsung Galaxy Pro-Game Team is a South Korean professional League of Legends team which participates in League of Legends Champions Korea, and is a part of the Korean e-Sports Association. Throughout its history as a professional Brood War team, and until September 2013 as a StarCraft II team, it was known as Samsung KHAN. The organisation entered League of Legends after acquiring the rosters of MVP Ozone and MVP Blue [1].

History[edit]

After the 2014 World Championship and the announcement by KeSPA of a new format for Korean competition which prohibited organizations from fielding multiple teams, Samsung was unable to retain any of its players from either Samsung White or Samsung Blue. The team was invited to compete in 2015 Champions Spring and on December 2nd 2014 announced a preliminary roster for the season consisting of CuVee, Eve, BlisS, Fury, and Wraith[2]. In Champions Spring Samsung's new roster struggled and finished in last place with a record of 2-12, forcing them to play in the summer promotion tournament. The team managed to qualify for Champions Summer by beating Prime and Xenics. Crown and Luna joined the roster[3] before the season started, helping Samsung to an improved record of 6-12 and avoiding relegation with a 7th place finish.

Samsung competed in the 2015 LoL KeSPA Cup, where they were upset by the eventual champions Ever in the first round. Afterwards, Samsung announced roster changes resulting in Eve, Ace, BlisS, Fury and Luna leaving the team[4] while Ambition, Helper, CoreJJ, and Stitch joined the lineup.[5]

In 2016 Champions Spring Samsung showed improvement over the previous year. After looking like they could clinch the fifth and final seed for the playoffs, Samsung were denied by the surging Afreeca Freecs who beat them by the game score tiebreaker and giving Samsung a sixth place finish for the split with a 10-8 record. In the midseason, Samsung Galaxy picked up a new AD Carry in Ruler, while CoreJJ moved to Support. During the 2016 summer split, Samsung showed considerable improvement, notably taking a 2-0 win against the ROX Tigers in the opening week. They ended the regular season in fourth place with a 12-6 series record, seeding them into the playoffs. They defeated the Afreeca Freecs in the first round, but were then matched against KT Rolster and swept 3-0 resulting in a fourth place finish. Samsung managed to qualify as the second seed in the LCK Regional Finals by accumalated circuit points. In the rematch against the Afreeca Freecs, Samsung lost the first game before swapping out veteran support Wraith for new ADC-turned-support CoreJJ. With this swap, Samsung managed to beat the Freecs 3-1 and move on to play against KT Rolster. Samsung, using this new roster, upset the heavy favorites 3-2 breaking a 19 game losing streak against KT and qualifying for the 2016 World Championship.

At the World Championship, Samsung were drawn into Group D along with North America's Team SoloMid, China's Royal Never Give Up, and Europe's Splyce. What followed was considered by many the most impressive team performance of the first two Weeks, as they won five of their six matches in what was arguably the hardest group at Worlds in convincing fashion. The team advanced to the Bracket Stage and was drawn against Cloud9, which they handily won 3-0 and moved on to the Semifinals, where they once again swept a Western team, this time Europe's H2k-Gaming. Their opponent in the Grand Finals were fellow Korean team SK Telecom T1: after losing the first two games, the Samsung squad went on to almost pull off a reverse sweep by winning Games 3 and 4. In the end, however, Samsung fell to SKT in a 49 minute game.
